Liz Bell and Theresa Sherry, seniors who led Princeton to a 51-14-6 record, three Ivy League championships and four NCAA tournaments in four years, shared the Don Betterton Award for unsung contributions to women's soccer, presented by head coach Julie Shackford at the team's annual banquet Sunday.
Bell started all but one game in her career, and her 70 games started are the most by any player in the history of the program. Sherry finished her career with 18 goals, ninth-best in program history.
Esmeralda Negron, the Ivy League Player of the Year and a third-team All-America after equalling the school record with 13 goals last season, was named the team's Most Valuable Player. Negron missed the banquet to finish her tryout at the U.S. Under-21 national team camp in California.
Sophomore Maija Garnaas and junior Elizabeth Pillion were named the team's Most Improved Players. In addition to being a key midfielder, Garnaas was also a District II Academic All-America. Pillion, a relative newcomer to competitive soccer, made a huge jump from her first season with the team to last season, and she assisted on Sherry's goal in the Tigers' 2-1 loss to Villanova in the opening-round of the NCAA tournament.
Janine Willis, Sylvia Morelli and Brea Griffiths will be Princeton's 2004 captains.
