East Norriton, Pa. - Lindsay Motal hit the first two home runs of her career and Kristin Del Calvo hit two more to move within one of Princeton's individual career home run record as the softball team swept Saint Joseph's 8-7 and 2-0 at East Norriton Field.
The Tigers improved to 22-19 overall with their two wins today, three days after losing twice to Cornell to eliminate themselves from the Ivy League title race. Unlike the Princeton team that was carried by its pitching for most of the season, the Princeton team at East Norriton Field used its bats to win big in the final week of its season..
Motal finished the day 4 for 6 with two runs and three RBIs as the Tigers exploded for 12 hits in the first game and nine in the second. Princeton hit five home runs after recording just 11 in its 39 games until today. In Game One, Princeton led 5-0 before the Hawks rallied. Del Calvo drove in the first two runs in the first inning with a two-out homer to center field that scored Cristina Cobb-Adams, who singled.
Cobb-Adams singled again in the third to score Melissa Finley before coming home on Del Calvo's second two-out, two-run homer of the day for a 5-0 Princeton lead.
Saint Joseph's tied the game in the bottom of the third, scoring five runs off four hits, including a three-run double from Rachel Pawlikowski. Each team scored twice more in the fourth, when Motal hit the first home run of her career to score Ty Ries, who doubled to right field. The Hawks knotted the game at 7-7 with a Lindsey McNamara two-run single.
Princeton scored the winning run off its fourth homer of the game, a solo shot from Erin Snyder, who hit just one other home run this season.
Cobb-Adams finished 3 for 4 with two runs and one RBI while Del Calvo went 2 for 4 with two runs and four RBIs. Del Calvo now has 21 career home runs, just one shy of tying the all-time career home run record at Princeton.
Calli Varner struck out three in the first three innings before Finley relieved her and earned the win in the last four innings.
After scoring seven of its eight first-game runs off home runs, Princeton continued the trend in Game Two when Motal hit her second dinger of the day to lead off the seventh and secure the 2-0 win.
The Tigers put their first run on the board in the third when Cobb-Adams reached on a fielder's choice that put Wendy Bingham, who singled, out at second. Del Calvo doubled to bring home Cobb-Adams for a 1-0 Princeton lead.
Motal was a perfect 3 for 3 in Game Two while Amanda Erickson went 2 for 3. Amelia Runyan pitched a three-hitter in the first complete game of her career.
Princeton returns to action with a doubleheader at Villanova this Thursday, April 29 at 1 p.m.
