Princeton, N.J. - Junior reliever Brian Kappel, junior center fielder B.J. Szymanski and senior second baseman Steve Young were each named First Team All-Ivy earlier today. Senior catcher Tim Lahey was named Second Team All-Ivy and four other Tigers were received honorable mentions.
Kappel led the Tiger bullpen this season with 22 appearances. He posted a 3-2 record and recorded eight saves. His 2.80 ERA leads the Tiger pitching staff and he has struck out 42 batters in 35 and a third innings pitched. Kappel was unanimous selection.
Szymanski receives his second All-Ivy honor in two seasons. Last year he was named to the Second Team. Szymanski tops the Princeton offensive charts in several categories, including batting average (.378), hits (62), triples (8), RBIs (48) and slugging percentage (.646). Young earns First Team All-Ivy recognition for the first time in his career. As a sophomore he was a league honorable mention. Young finished the season batting .365 with 54 hits. He has scored a team-high 46 runs and has a team-leading on-base percentage of .492 thanks to 30 walks. Young led all Tigers during the Ivy season with a .406 batting average. Young was unanimous selection.
This season was the first since 2000 and only the sixth time that Princeton had three players named to the first team. In 2000, Princeton had six honorees. Other years when Princeton had at least three are 1970, 1971, 1985, 1986 and 1996.
Lahey received his second honor from the Ivy League as a second team honoree. Last season he was named an honorable mention. He batted .260 with 33 hits and 30 RBIs.
Junior pitcher Ross Ohlendorf, junior left fielder Adam Balkan, sophomore right fielder Andrew Salini and junior designated hitter Will Venable received honorable mentions for their strong seasons.
Princeton returns to action at the NCAA tournament the first weekend in June. The Tigers will learn of the location and opponent when the NCAA announces the field on Memorial Day.
