May 16, 2004
Worcester, Mass - The Princeton men's lightweight crew, led by head coach Joe Murtaugh, placed three boats in its respective grand finals, and two earned medals at the 2004 Eastern Sprints, held at Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Mass.
Varsity Eight
The defending Eastern champion Princeton Tigers made their way back to the grand final did well with an outside lane in 2003, and they hoped it would work again this season. Starting in lane six, the Tigers were able to topple two of three Ivy rivals in the grand final. Unfortunately, the championship came down to Harvard and two non-Ivy programs, Georgetown and Navy. The Midshipmen would pull away from Harvard in the end to win the race in 05:53.88, more than two seconds ahead of the Crimson. Georgetown took third, while Princeton finished fourth in 06:00.29.
Second Varsity Eight
While Navy, Cornell and Rutgers were in the grand final of the second varsity eight, the title came down to the historic H-Y-P rivalry. Harvard would pull away from the field to win in 06:03.60, while Yale placed second and Princeton earned bronze. The Tigers earned a medal by coming in at 06:07.45, nearly three seconds ahead of Navy.
Freshman Eight
Harvard, which won the team points title, took the freshman eight grand final in 06:02.01, but the drama came as three teams battled for two spots on the medal stand. Princeton, Penn and Navy all battled within one second of each other as they raced down the stretch. The Midshipmen earned silver, while Princeton barely edged out Penn in a time of 06:04.60 to earn bronze and a spot on the medal stand.
