Princeton, N.J. - The Princeton baseball team defeated Cornell 3-2 in the nightcap to sweep a doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Clarke Field. Senior Brian Biegen earned the win in his final Clarke Field appearance and sophomore Matthew Becker hit his third homer of the season in the game. Princeton completes the Ivy League regular season at 12-8 and improved to 24-18 overall on the season.
After three scoreless innings, Princeton jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning. Junior Adam Balkan hit a leadoff double into left center and after Cornell got two Tiger outs, senior Ryan Reich laced a single through the right to score Balkan and put Princeton ahead. The Tigers added to their lead on the first pitch of the next inning when sophomore Matthew Becker hit his third homer of the season into the evergreens in left field. Senior Steve Young then bunted for a single and advanced to second when the ball was thrown away. Young went to third on a groundout and scored on error by Cornell pitcher Dan Gala as he tried to pickoff junior B.J. Szymanski at first. Szymanski made it to third but tried to score and was thrown out at the plate.
Cornell made it 3-1 in the sixth inning by stringing together three singles and added another run in the seventh when Seth Gordon led off with a double and eventually scored on a failed pickoff attempt at first.
Biegen pitched five and two-thirds innings and allowed just one run on nine hits to post the win and improve to 4-1. He walked one and struck out two in his final home appearance. Freshman Eric Walz came on in the sixth inning and allowed one run in one and a third innings pitched. Junior Brian Kappel retired the side in the ninth for his seventh save of the season and second of the day.
The Tigers visit Rider on Wednesday afternoon at 3 p.m., in their final regular season non-conference game. Princeton travels to Dartmouth next weekend for the Ivy League Championship Series.
