Princeton, N.J. - William (Todd) Leavitt, '86, will receive the Robert L. Peters, Jr. '42 award at the reunions alumni game Saturday, May 29. The ceremony will begin at 5 p.m. at Clarke Field.
Given annually to an alumnus who has made significant contributions to the game of baseball and has distinguished himself after graduation in his chosen field of endeavor, the award was established by the Friends of Princeton baseball in 1984 in honor of Bob Peters, an outstanding player in his day and an inspiration to generations of Princeton student athletes.
A three-year varsity baseball letterman at shortstop and tri-captain his senior year, Todd Leavitt was named to the all-EIBL (Eastern Intercollegiate Baseball League) twice. As a senior he batted a team-leading .347 with 134 hits and 72 RBIs. He won the Leroy Gifford Kellogg trophy in his freshman year for excelling in sportsmanship, athletic endeavor and devotion to baseball.
A native of Highland Park, N.J., Leavitt entered the Navy after graduation via Officer Candidate School and was commissioned the following November. His initial tour was part of the commissioning crew of the USS San Jacinto. He subsequently helped commission the USS Stout and served as an executive officer on the USS Benfold. In February of this year he assumed command of the guided-missile destroyer USS Winston S. Churchill, home ported in Norfolk, Va.
At the ceremony, the team will also recognize former Princeton coach and recent hall of fame honoree Tom O'Connell and longtime Princeton equipment manager Hank Towns. The ceremony will follow the team's alumni game, which is slated for 10:30 a.m. at Clarke Field. The day will begin with batting practice at 9:30 a.m., followed by the game from 10:30 a.m., until noon.
