Lahey, Young Ink Professional Deals With Twins, Tigers

Princeton, N.J. - Seniors Tim Lahey and Steve Young became the first two of the five Tigers drafted in this season's Major League Baseball Draft to sign professional contracts with the team's that drafted them. Lahey is in the Minnesota Twins organization and Young will play in the Detroit Tigers farm system.
Lahey was the first to sign and was sent to an extended spring training camp in Fort Myers, Fla. When that session wraps up this weekend, he will be assigned to the Elizabethton (Tenn.) Twins, Minnesota's Rookie League affiliate in the Appalacian League. Elizabethton opens its 2004 season on Monday, June 21 against the Greeneville Astros. Lahey was selected by the Twins 601st overall in the 20th round.
After signing, Young also reported for extended spring training in Lakeland, Fla. He will likely be assigned to the Oneonta Tigers, Detroit's Short Season Class A affiliate in Oneonta, N.Y. The team competes in the New York-Penn League and its season begins this weekend. Young was selected 463rd overall by the Tigers in the 16th round.
The three other Princetonians selected in the draft, juniors B.J. Szymanski, Ross Ohlendorf and Will Venable, have yet to sign.
