Ohlendorf, Reich Lead Princeton to NCAA Regional Win Over Virginia 4-2

Charlottesville, Va. - Junior Ross Ohlendorf pitched a brilliant game and senior Ryan Reich had three RBIs as the Princeton baseball team defeated Virginia 4-2 at the Charlottesville Regional of the 2004 NCAA Baseball Tournament. Princeton advances to the winner's bracket of the regional and will meet Vanderbilt tonight at 7 p.m.
It was Princeton's first NCAA Tournament win since the 2000 season when the Tigers defeated The Citadel 11-6 in the South Carolina Regional.
After both teams went down quietly in the first inning, Princeton threatened in the second with back-to-back leadoff singles by sophomore Andrew Salini and senior Tim Lahey, but Virginia pitcher Andrew Dobies was able to get a double play to break up the Tiger threat and keep the game scoreless. An inning later in the third it was Virginia that used a pair of leadoff singles to threaten, but Princeton junior Ross Ohlendorf got Virginia to pop up a bunt, strikeout and groundout to quell the Cavalier threat.
The game remained scoreless until Virginia came to the plate in the fourth inning. Scott Headd drew a one-out walk and stole second to move into scoring position. Headd then scored when Paul Gillispie's RBI-double hugged third base and died in shallow left field.

The Tigers moved ahead by a run in the top of the sixth to make the score 2-1. Senior Steve Young led off with an infield single and advanced to third when junior B.J. Szymanski's singled dropped in shallow center field. Salini then posted his second hit of the game, a lined single to right field, to score Young and put the Tigers ahead.
Virginia got the run back in the bottom half of the sixth and made the score 2-2. Ryan Zimmerman hit a leadoff single to right and after stealing second advanced to third on Headd's infield single. Matt Street then dragged a bunt along the first base line that scored Zimmerman from third.

Ohlendorf pitched eight and two-thirds innings and allowed just two Virginia runs on eight hits while striking out six batters. The win lifted him to 7-3 on the season. After a pair of singles off of Ohlendorf on the ninth, junior Brian Kappel came on and got the final out to preserve Princeton's win. It was his ninth save of the season and tied the Princeton single season record for saves. After a pair of Dobies went seven innings and allowed three runs on eight hits. He took the loss and falls to 6-3 on the season.
