Lauren Simmons ran the seventh-fastest time in the opening round of the women's 800 meter run at the U.S. Olympic Trials in Sacramento Friday night.
Simmons will compete Saturday in the semifinal round, which will be the final event of the day in Sacramento. The race will begin approximately 9:40 p.m. Eastern time. The women's 800 meter final will be held Monday at approximately 10 p.m. Eastern time.
Simmons, the NCAA runner-up in the 800 her senior year, won the von Kienbusch Award as Princeton's top female senior sportswoman in 2003.
Her time of 2:03.52 was the seventh-best of the first round, though it was only .28 seconds away from second place. The remaining 16 runners in the event will be cut to eight for Monday's final, and the top three in Monday's final will qualify for the Olympics, provided they have met the Olympic "A" qualifying standard time.
