Final Stats
Greensboro, N.C. - Diana Matheson and Emily Behncke scored goals and Madeleine Jackson made four saves - three in a frantic final 30 seconds of the first half - to give 17th-ranked Princeton a 2-0 win over UNC Greensboro Friday night.
The game was played in a heavy downpour in the first half that tapered to misty rain in the second.
The win improved the Tigers to 4-0, while UNC Greensboro, the defending Southern Conference champion, fell to 4-3. Princeton, who has now defeated three teams from last year's NCAA tournament, completes its weekend trip to North Carolina Sunday when it plays at Wake Forest.
Matheson, a freshman who has at least one point in all four games, scored off a perfect setup by Esmeralda Negron 15 minutes into the game. The score stayed 1-0 until Behncke ripped in a shot from 20 yards out, also on an assist from Negron. Behncke and Matheson are tied for the team lead with three goals each.
UNC Greensboro, whom Princeton defeated 3-0 in Princeton last year, had a chance to tie the score in the final 30 seconds of the first half. The Spartans had four shots from within six yards of the goal, but Jackson knocked aside three of them and saw the fourth sail wide. Jackson has not allowed a goal in 180 minutes this season.
Princeton has shut out its last three opponents. Wake Forest, like Princeton, is one 19 teams in Division I to have appeared in the NCAA tournament each of the last five years.
