Winston-Salem, N.C. - Melanie Schneider scored on a free kick in the first half and Heather Currie made seven saves to make the goal stand up as Wake Forest defeated Princeton 1-0 Sunday afternoon in women's soccer.
The loss was seventeenth-ranked Princeton's first of the season after opening with four straight wins, including one Friday night over UNG Greensboro in the opener of its weekend trip to North Carolina.
Princeton has played five games this season, four against teams from the 2003 NCAA tournament. Princeton went 3-1 in those four games, with twins over two teams from the 2003 Sweet 16.
"I thought we were a little tentative in the first half," said Princeton coach Julie Shackford. "I though we looked really sharp in the second half, but we couldn't get one. It reminded me of the NCAA tournament game last year against Villanova [a 2-1 Princeton loss]. We had a lot of shots in the second half and put a lot of pressure on them, but it didn't work out."
Princeton outshot Wake Forest 13-11 for the game and 9-3 in the second half. Janine Willis had the best scoring opportunity for the Tigers in the second half, but Currie made a big save on Willis' blast.
Emily Vogelzang made five saves for Princeton. The game featured two of the 19 teams in Division I who have played in the NCAA tournament each of the last five years.
Princeton opens its Ivy League season Friday night at Yale.
