East Lansing, Mich. - The Princeton women's golf team wrapped up its first weekend of the 2004 season with a sixth-place finish at the Mary Fossum Invitational at Michigan State's Forest Akers West Golf Course. Sophomore Sharla Cloutier was the top Tiger in the individual standings with a ninth-place finish.
The Tigers had entered the second day and third round of the tournament in fifth, but were edged out in the final rundown by Illinois State. Princeton shot a third-round 315 to complete the tournament at 935, 71 strokes above par and 16 strokes off the pace set by the tournament-winning team from Michigan. Michigan State, Northwestern and Wisconsin claimed spots two through four in the 15-team field.
In the individual standings, Michigan's Brianna Broderick posted a seven-stroke victory. Princeton's top finisher was Cloutier who shot a final-round 78 to finish +15 for the tournament, which was 12 strokes off of the lead. She finished in a six-way tie for ninth.
Princeton's next finisher was freshman Annika Welander in 16th. She shot a 79 to finish at +17 in a tie for 16th. Senior Avery Kiser was next in 28th. Her final round of 82 left her 20 over for the tournament. Sophomore Alexis Etow shot Princeton's lowest round on Sunday with a 77. That left her +26 for the tournament in 48th. Seniors Taryn Haladay and Meg Nakamura completed Princeton's competitors, finishing in 58th and 74th respectively with final rounds of 81 and 84.
Princeton returns to action when it hosts the Princeton Invitational next weekend.
