No. 11 Princeton Hosts Defending Ivy Women's Soccer Champion Dartmouth
September 30, 2004 | Women's Soccer
Sept. 30, 2004
The Princeton women's soccer team has not played at home in 30 days, since opening the season Sept. 3. The Tigers, ranked 11th this week, begin a stretch where six of the next seven are at home, and the first of those games is a huge one. Princeton welcomes Darmtouth to Lourie-Love Field Saturday (1) in a game matching two teams who are 1-0 in the Ivy League. Just for added incentive, Dartmouth ended Princeton's three-year run of Ivy championships a year ago, when the Big Green defeated Princeton on a goal with 48 seconds remaining and then went on to win the league title.
Dartmouth (4-3-2, 1-0) at Princeton (6-1, 1-0) ...
In case you forgot - Dartmouth defeated Princeton 3-2 a year ago in Hanover on a goal with 48 seconds remaining.
More forgot - Dartmouth won the outright Ivy League championship a year ago, ending Princeton's run of three straight championships.
Polling place - Princeton is ranked 11th in this week's NSCAA coaches' poll. Princeton is also ranked 18th by both Soccer Buzz and Soccer America. Welcome home - Princeton plays its first home game in 30 days after playing its last six games on the road. Princeton now plays six of its next seven games at home.
I'm honored - Brea Griffiths was named Ivy League Player of the Week this past week. Griffiths scored the first goal in Princeton's 3-0 win over Yale and led a defense that shut out Yale and Hartford while holding them to a combined nine shots.
Aw, shoot - Princeton has outshot its opponents 113-48; Princeton outshot its two opponents last weekend, Yale and Hartford, 51-9.
Highly offensive- After a shutout loss to Wake Forest and a scoreless first half against Yale, Princeton scored seven goals in the final 125 minutes against Yale and Hartford.
Minute woman - Romy Trigg-Smith is the only Princeton player to have played every minute of each of the first seven games this season.
Es good as it gets - Esmeralda Negron leads the Ivy League in goals per game, points and points per game and is tied for the lead in goals with Dartmouth's Sarah Johnson.
More Es - Esmeralda Negron ranks second all-time at Princeton in goals (32) and points (71) in a career. The school records are 41 and 94, both held by Linda DeBoer '85.
The Jackson three - Madeleine Jackson has three shutouts in three games this season. Jackson has not allowed a goal in 270 minutes.
D plus - Princeton is tied with UC-Riverside (not including UC-Riverside's game last night with Cal State Fullerton) for having allowed the fewest goals in Division I women's soccer (two).
For starters - Esmeralda Negron and Romy Trigg-Smith are the only two Princeton players to have started every game the last two seasons.
Ready when the bell rings - Princeton has won at least six of its first seven games for the fifth straight season.
History lesson - Princeton head coach Julie Shackford is 4-1 in her last five games against Dartmouth; Shackford was 0-4 in her first four games against the Big Green. More history - Dartmouth defeated Princeton eight straight times from 1991-98.
Last history - Dartmouth leads the all-time series between the school 12-9-1.
Okay, one more history - Princeton's seven goals against Yale and Hartford last weekend were the most by the Tigers in back-to-back road games since scoring five at Villanova and three at Rochester in 1984.
Can you spare a dime? - Maura Gallagher ranks fifth all-time at Princeton with 12 assists. She needs one to tie Krista Ariss '02 for fourth and two to tie Lynette Prescott '84 for third.
Working overtime - Dartmouth has played four overtime games this season and is 0-2-2 in those four games, including a 2-1 loss to Boston University Wednesday afternoon.
Green with envy - Dartmouth has four wins, and all four wins have been by shutout. Dartmouth is winless (0-2-2) when its opponent scores a goal.
Coming attractions - Princeton hosts Rutgers Tuesday night. The game will be televised by Patriot Media on tape delay.
