Brown Nets 1001 And Leads Tigers To Win

New Haven, Conn. -- Becky Brown claims her spot in the Princeton record books as she nets her 1,000 career-point and leads the women's basketball team to a 56-52 win over Yale Saturday night in the John Lee Amphitheater. Princeton improves to 9-6 and is 1-1 in the conference, while Yale falls to 3-14 and is 0-4 in the League. It became a two-point game after Morgan Richards made two back-to-back threes with 3:40 remaining in the game. Yale had opened a 12-2 run after Princeton led by 12 with 10 minutes to go in regulation. After two strong defensive stands, sophomore Elyse Umeda came up with a loose ball and found Meagan Cowher under the basket to give Princeton a four point lead, 52-48 with 1:50 left to play.
Yale's Tory Mauseth was fouled and made both shots on an one-and-one opportunity. On the inbounds play Digovich was fouled again and made the first shot, but the second was lost out of bounds. Yale retained possesion but couldn't score and Umeda managed to get another loose rebound for the Tigers and sealed the game by going to the free throw line. At the 10:39 mark of the second half Brown flashed at the high-post then dropped to the block and was met by the ball. Brown took two steps toward the basket and went down as the 14th Tiger to score 1,000 points. She finished with 16 points and six rebounds in the game. Cowher won the opening tip and found Digovich to score the first basket of the night. Princeton led 15-6 four minutes into the game forcing Yale to take a timeout. Following the water break the bulldogs went on a 6-0 run and cut the Tiger advantage to three, 15-12. Junior Katy O'Brien got a steal and made a fast break pass to Umeda who went up for a lay-up and was fouled hard. Umeda bounced up from the fall and sank two free throws to give Princeton a 26-14 lead. Yale went on a 8-2 run with just three minutes remaining in the first half and trailed 30-20 before Digovich made a three-pointer from a foot behind the arc to end the half at 35-22. The Bulldogs held momentum in the opening seven minutes of the second half. They went on a 14-6 run, heightened by four points from both Sarah Zoubek and Page and trailed by only five, 41-36. Cowher scored 13 points and grabbed six boards, while Digovich chipped in 10 points and another six rebounds. Yale out-rebounded the Tigers 37-28. Princeton returns to Jadwin Gym on Tuesday as they host Penn. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
