PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Princeton's three-match unbeaten streak against Rutgers ended on Tuesday night when the Scarlet Knights (5-9-1) used a 90th-minute free kick to take a 2-1 lead over the Tiger women's soccer team (3-6-2) and hold on for the last 33 seconds of the contest to beat Princeton for the first time since the 2001 NCAA Tournament.
The Orange and Black's cause was helped less than a minute into the game on an own goal by Rutgers in the only scoring of the first half. But the Scarlet Knights' Domenique Esposito and Nina Montero each had three points in the second stanza to nullify the own goal and score the game winner as both had a goal and assisted on the other. Esposito's score game first, when Montero provided the helper on the 60th-minute equalizer. Assists on Montero's last-minute free kick went to both Esposito and Danae Risoli.
After missing the second half in Princeton's last game at Brown on Saturday, goalkeeper Maren Dale was in net for all 90 minutes, making three saves on six Rutgers shots. Princeton finished the game with three shots while each team tallied two corner opportunities.
The Tigers, 1-2 in Ivy play, return to the conference slate on Saturday at 4 p.m. as part of a doubleheader against Columbia with the Princeton men's team.
