SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - Eliseo Giusfredi scored two second-half goals, one on a long free kick to tie the game and another on a volley in the final minutes, to lead 20th-ranked Seton Hall to a 3-1 win over Princeton in a men's soccer game played at Owen T. Carroll Field Tuesday afternoon.
Though Giusfredi tied the game and then added insurance, the Pirates (10-2-2) didn't go ahead in the game until the 79th minute, when Christos Zisimatos blasted a 30-yard shot to the upper right corner of the Princeton net to give his team a 2-1 lead. The game had been tied for more than 20 minutes prior to that goal.
Princeton (3-6-1), playing for the first time in 11 days due to two weather-related postponements, played even with the Pirates in the first half and took a 1-0 lead with just more than two minutes left in the half. Ben Young took a pass from Darren Spicer and scored on a 15-yard shot past Seton Hall goalie Ian Joyce at the 42:42 mark, giving the Tigers a 1-0 halftime lead.
Giusfredi's ninth goal of the year would tie the game at 1-1 11 minutes into the second half. The goal was unassisted and came on a direct kick opportunity that eluded the Princeton wall from well outside the penalty area.
With Princeton pressing to get the tying goal, Giusfredi then gave the Pirates a two-goal lead with less than five minutes left, taking a back heel from Sacha Kljestan and scoring to make it 3-1.
Princeton goalie Bobby Guelich had five saves for the Tigers, who lost their third straight game. Young's goal was his first of the season for the Tigers, who hadn't played since meeting Brown Oct. 7. The long layoff allowed two Princeton starters, defender Robbie Morgenroth and forward Adrian Melville, to return to the starting lineup. Both had been out with leg injuries in the past several weeks, and Melville had two of Princeton's six shots.
Seton Hall outshot the Tigers 17-6, including 12-2 in the decisive second half. The Pirates extended their unbeaten streak to six games.
Princeton travels to Harvard Saturday morning for an Ivy League game (11 a.m.) before hosting Northwestern in a rescheduled game Sunday afternoon at Lourie-Love Field.
