CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Darren Spicer scored his team-leading fifth goal of the season for Princeton with just under 20 minutes left in regulation and Harvard held off one last Tiger chance in overtime as the the Tigers and Crimson played to a 1-1 tie in an Ivy League men's soccer game at Ohiri Field Saturday.
Princeton (3-6-2, 0-2-1 Ivy) was in danger of falling to 0-3 in league play before Spicer's tying goal in the 70th minute. Classmate Ben Young took the ball down the left side, where he served a ball that Spicer headed in past Harvard goalie Ryan Johnson.
The Tigers ensured the game would go to overtime late in regulation, when Zach Schwarz made a key defensive play that stopped a sure Harvard goal with three minutes left. Harvard then ensured a tie late in the game, when defender Will Craig made a slide tackle on a Princeton chance in the final minute.
After a scoreless first half, Harvard (4-6-2, 0-3-1 Ivy) took the lead just over five minutes into the second 45 minutes. Tony Tornaritis took a pass from his brother, Nick, and scored past Princeton goalie Bobby Guelich at the 50:41 mark. Jeremy Tchou was also credited with an assist on the play.
Guelich had six saves for the Tigers, who outshot Harvard 13-7 in the second half. Johnson made seven saves for the Crimson, who broke a five-game losing streak with the tie.
Princeton hosts Northwestern Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. in a rescheduled affair from the postponed game between the teams two weeks ago. The Tigers will look to break a five-game streak without a win (0-3-2) dating back to a win at Drexel Sept. 24.
