PRINCETON, N.J. - At 1-1 in the Ivy League, the Princeton women's soccer team (3-4-2, 1-1-0) enters another important conference contest on Saturday night at Brown (4-7-0, 0-2-0 Ivy). The Tigers are one of four teams with an even record in Ivy play, trailing Yale at 2-0 and Penn at 1-0-1.
Brown has lost three straight, most recently a 1-0 loss at Army last Sunday following dropping their first two league games against Dartmouth and Columbia. Princeton, after falling in the Ivy opener against Yale, 2-1, has shut out its last two opponents while racking up six combined goals in wins over La Salle, 4-0, and at Dartmouth, 2-0.
Eight would be Great - Princeton has won the last seven yearly meetings against Brown and is 8-1-1 in head coach Julie Shackford's tenure. During the winning streak, Princeton has not allowed more than one goal in any of the seven games and has engineered three shutouts to outscore the Bears 14-4.
The Last Meeting - In 2004, Princeton topped Brown, 2-0, at Lourie Love Field in the midst of a nine-game win streak. Madeline Jackson needed to make only one save as Princeton outshot Brown 22-2 with Elizabeth Pillion scoring in the 19th minute and Diana Matheson providing the second goal in the game's 52nd minute.
Matheson Honored - For scoring a game-winning goal in each of Princeton's two games last week against La Salle and Dartmouth, sophomore midfielder Diana Matheson was named the Ivy League Co-Player of the Week. She started the Orange and Black on a four-goal run against the Explorers with less than 20 minutes to go in the game and scored in the first half against the Big Green to help Princeton even its Ivy record. She also assisted on Princeton's second goal at Dartmouth for a total of five points in two games. Can't Get Anything Past Her - Tiger sophomore netminder Maren Dale has not allowed a goal in 206 game minutes, counting the last 26 minutes of the Yale game and her shutouts against La Salle and Dartmouth. This will be her first time facing Brown.
An Early Advantage - Brown had an 11-3-2 record in the first 16 games of the series from 1980-1994 before Princeton all but closed the gap with the 8-1-1 mark against the Bears in Julie Shackford's tenure.
Diversifying Their Portfolio - Before the La Salle game, all seven of Princeton's goals had come off the feet of senior Emily Behncke or sophomore Diana Matheson. Since then, freshman Sarah Peteraf scored two goals against the Explorers and sophomore Aubrey Wagenseller had the final goal against La Salle.
Making Them Count - Dartmouth outshot Princeton 14-9 last Sunday, but none of the Big Green's 14 shots found the back of the net while two of Princeton's nine shots did. Dartmouth also had all six corner kick opportunities snuffed out while Princeton only had one such opportunity.
