McCareins Leads Four First-Team All-Ivy Selections, Wins Esteemed Poe-Kazmaier Trophy

PRINCETON - Led by unanimous first-team selections Jay McCareins and Colin McDonough, a cast of 10 Princeton football players were honored Tuesday by being named to the 2005 All-Ivy League football team. McCareins and McDonough were joined on the first team by leading tackler Justin Stull and leading receiver Jon Dekker, both of whom were also honored at Monday night's Princeton Football Association banquet.

McCareins and McDonough are both making their second appearances on the All-Ivy first team. McCareins, the NCAA leader in interceptions, was the ultimate playmaker for a Princeton squad that won seven games for the first time since 1995. He scored four touchdowns this season despite not gaining one offensive yard all season. He returned interceptions for scores in wins over Lafayette and San Diego, and he returned a missed field goal 100 yards for a score in the season-ending 30-0 win over Dartmouth. His biggest play, and arguably the biggest play in the last decade of Princeton football, came when he returned a fourth-quarter kickoff 93 yards for a touchdown for the winning margin in a 27-24 victory at Harvard. The final play of his career, fittingly, was an interception, the ninth of his season and 18th of his brilliant career.
Princeton's other unanimous selection, McDonough, also posted dominant league numbers this year. He averaged 40.0 yards per punt, nearly two more than any other punter in the Ivy League. McDonough, a three-time All-Ivy selection who was Princeton's first freshman ever to earn first-team honors, had a long punt of 60 yards and pinned 12 punts inside his opponent's 20-yard-line. McDonough is the lone member of Princeton's four first-team selections who will return next season. Stull, a senior co-captain for the second-place Tigers, also earned his third consecutive spot on the All-Ivy team. A first-team selection in 2003 and a second-team selection last year, Stull made his way back on the first-team among a loaded crop of Ivy League linebackers. Stull led Princeton with 86 tackles this season and added 6.5 tackles for loss, four sacks and two forced fumbles. Stull is the Ivy League leader in tackles over the last three seasons and ends his career as the third-leading tackler all-time at Princeton.
Dekker is the only member of the Princeton offense to earn first-team honors. He led Princeton with 32 receptions and four touchdowns, both of which were career highs. He averaged 11.5 yards per catch and scored touchdowns in crucial consecutive victories, a 20-17 overtime win against Cornell and the 30-13 win at Penn, Princeton's first victory over the Quakers since the 1995 season.
A pair of senior offensive linemen highlighted Princeton's second-team selections. Tackle Ben Brielmaier, a senior co-captain, and guard Paul Lyons, a 2003 All-Ivy selection, made up the left side of the Tiger offensive line. Despite an inexperienced backfield this season, the Princeton offense typically gained its biggest yards of the season running behind Brielmaier and Lyons.
Linebacker Abi Fadeyi earned second-team status after leading Princeton with 11 tackles for loss and finishing second on the team with four sacks and 68 tackles. One of the most athletic outside linebackers in the Ivy League, Fadeyi was a fierce blitzer who also contained numerous outside runs because of speed and tackling ability. Fadeyi and Stull, who shared the top defensive freshman award at Princeton in 2005, combined to become one of the premier sets of linebackers in the Ivy League.
Placekicker Derek Javarone ends his career as the all-time leading field goal kicker at both Princeton and in the Ivy League. Javarone, who made 45 field goals in his four years at Princeton, earned second-team status after kicking 16-of-18 field goals for a league-best 88.9% success rate. Javarone made the two biggest kicks of his career against Cornell, a 32-yarder to force overtime and a 35-yarder in the extra session to earn the 20-17 victory.
Princeton's Tim Strickland and Dave Szelingowski earned All-Ivy Honorable Mention. Strickland finished second on the team with four interceptions, including one in overtime to help clinch the win against Cornell. Szelingowski, a three-year starter at right tackle, anchored the right side of the line this season.

2005 Princeton Football Association Team Award Winners
The Princeton Football Association held The Donold B. Lourie '22 Football Banquet Monday night and handed out the following members of the 2005 football team:
Harland "Pink" Baker '22 Award - Established in 1981 by the Friends of Princeton Football in honor of Harland "Pink" Baker '22, varsity letterman on the "Team of Destiny" and longtime friend of Princeton football players. Awarded annually to that freshman defensive player of good moral character who has proven himself an intelligent and stalwart player and who has demonstrated a cooperative spirit and an ability to motivate his teammates.
2005 winner: Peter Buchignani
The Charles W. Caldwell Memorial Trophy - Awarded to that senior member of the varsity football squad who has shown the greatest improvement in football during his years at Princeton. In memory of Charles W. Caldwell '25, head coach of Princeton football from 1945-1957.

The Class of '52 Football Award - Established in 1988 by the Class of 1952 as a mark of their love, devotion and service. Awarded annually to that member of the football team who has excelled on special teams play, exemplifying pride, hustle and determination.
