PRINCETON, N.J. - Princeton freshman point guard Jessica Berry has been named the Ivy League Rookie of the Week for women's basketball in recognition of her 30-point output against St. Mary's on Friday night and her 11-point follow-up on Saturday against Central Florida at the Hilton Concord Thanksgiving Classic in Moraga, Calif.
Berry hit 10 of 15 shots from the field against the Gaels, nearly leading a final-minute comeback in a 75-70 loss. The point total is one short of the rookie record held by Becky Brown, who scored 31 points against Dartmouth on Mar. 8, 2003, also the last time a Princeton player hit the 30-point mark. Berry was also 3 of 5 from three-point range and made 7 of 10 from the line while recording a game-high six assists.
Against Central Florida the next night, Berry hit six free throws in a row to help Princeton preserve its lead and thwart a UCF attempt to erase a double-digit lead in the final two minutes of a 91-87 win. Berry hit 9 of 10 from the line for the game and had no turnovers in 34 minutes as the Orange and Black had its fewest turnovers, nine, in four years.
Berry stands second on the team in points per game, averaging 13.3 while reaching double-digits in three of her four games. The Tigers travel to Monmouth on Thursday before hosting Colgate on Saturday.
