Box Score
PHILADELPHIA - The Princeton men's soccer team continued a remarkable string of success against one of its biggest rivals Saturday night in Philadelphia, and the Tigers did it in dramatic fashion.
Darren Spicer's goal with 4:25 left in the second half was Princeton's second in less than five minutes and was enough to give the Tigers a 2-1 win over Penn at Rhodes Field, extending Princeton's unbeaten streak against the Quakers to an amazing 20 consecutive seasons.
Spicer's goal, his team-leading sixth of the season, came from in close to the net just 4:47 after classmate Ben Young scored his second goal of the season to tie the game at 1-1. Young's shot was a blast from nearly 25 yards away that beat Penn goalie Dan Cepero at the 80:48 mark.
Senior Adrian Melville was credited with the assist on both goals, his second and third assists of the season.
Princeton (5-7-3, 2-2-1 Ivy) still has a chance to finish as high as second place in the league standings thanks to the win, while Penn (9-5-1, 2-3-1 Ivy) remained winless against the Tigers since the 1985 season. The Tigers are 18-0-2 against the Quakers in that 20-season span.
Both teams had seven shots in a scoreless first half, and that remained the score until 22 minutes into the second half. A pair of Penn passes resulted in a chance for Mike Klein, who scored his fifth goal of the season at the 67:35 mark to give the Quakers the lead.
Princeton goalie Bobby Guelich had three second-half saves and five saves overall for the game. The Tigers outshot the Quakers 14-13 overall. The Tigers host Columbia Tuesday night at Lourie-Love Field (7 p.m.)
