PRINCETON, N.J. - With all five returning starters and nine of its top 10 scorers back from last season, the Princeton women's basketball team has been selected third in the Ivy League preseason poll, the conference office announced Tuesday. With 93 poll points, the Tigers were nearly predicted for a second-place finish, just two poll points behind Harvard.
The Tigers are led by senior center Becky Brown, who stands 10th on the Princeton all-time scoring list with 1,161 points heading into the season and could stand eighth on that list with a solid opening night performance. While Brown, who averaged 13.8 points and 6.7 rebounds last season, was named second-team All-Ivy, senior guard Katy O'Brien was an All-Ivy honorable mention.
Sophomore Meagan Cowher, who was second on the team in scoring last year at 11.1 points per game, returns after earning the first Ivy League Rookie of the Year honor in program history, and Ariel Rogers, a fellow All-Ivy Rookie Team pick, also returns for her second year.
"It's flattering to be considered among the top teams in the league," said head coach Richard Barron. "The media got it right by picking Dartmouth first with all the talent they have returning. It will be exciting to see how improved we'll be with the strong nucleus we have returning and a good group of new players added to it."
Dartmouth was the unanimous choice to repeat as league champions, collecting all 16 first-place votes. The poll's voters included two local media members for each of the eight teams. Princeton adds five freshmen and graduated only one senior last year from a team that finished 13-14 overall, the most wins since Barron began on Old Nassau in 2001-02.
