WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Princeton women's basketball team (5-2) ended the first half on an 11-0 run at Army (4-4) and never stopped running. Behind a balanced effort that saw 10 players score with Becky Brown's 18 points as a game-high, the Tigers rolled past the Black Knights 73-52 on Thursday night at Christl Arena in West Point, N.Y., and into their best start since 1995-96.
The Tigers dominated Army both offensively and defensively, outshooting the Black Knights 46.0 percent to 33.3 percent. Thanks to 14 steals and 25 Army turnovers, Princeton had more opportunities on its offensive end, hitting 29 of 63 shots from the field to 18 of 54 for Army. Meanwhile, Army stole only six balls from Princeton and received nine fewer turnovers than it gave up. Those Black Knight turnovers contributed to 27 of the Tigers' points.
After the halftime break, Princeton scored 12 of the first 14 points to jump out to a 46-28 lead. The advantage grew as large as 28 at 65-37 as there was no hint of a second-half letdown. The Tigers bettered their shooting from the first half, up from 44.4 percent to 48.1 percent while Army's stayed the same at 33.3 percent. Princeton was able to dominate despite the two teams matching 39 rebounds thanks to the greater number of Tiger attempts.
While Brown's 18 led all scorers, Ariel Rogers had 10 and three others, including Casey Lockwood, Katy O'Brien and Whitney Downs, came within a basket of reaching double-digits. Lockwood was the game's leading rebounder, pulling down eight. For Army, Cara Enright had 17 points and Erin Begonia had all three of the Black Knights' field goals from beyond the arc, leading to nine of her 14 points. Princeton took a 39-26 lead into the locker room due in large part to the 11-percent shooting edge in the opening 20 minutes. The Black Knights made only one of 11 shots from the field over the game's first six minutes, enabling Princeton, which hit five of its first eight, to take a 10-5 lead. Army recovered after the rusty start to shoot 50 percent for the rest of the first half and cut the Tiger lead to two at 21-19 and 28-26, but Princeton ended the half on the 11-0 run to gain the 13-point advantage. Julia Berger led the half-ending surge with two buckets and a free throw, while Rogers added a pair from the line and Lockwood hit two field goals. Marking the first half's intensity, the possession arrow was invoked six times on tie-ups in the opening frame.
The Tigers have their toughest test of the young season on Sunday at 2 p.m. when undefeated Rutgers, ranked No. 6 in the most recent USA Today/ESPN coaches poll and No. 7 in the latest Associated Press poll, visits Jadwin Gym.
