Santa Barbara, Calif. - Elyse Colgan scored on a four-meter penalty shot in sudden-death overtime to cap an exciting 7-6 comeback win for the 19th-ranked Princeton women's water polo team over No. 18 Arizona State Friday morning in the second game of the Gaucho Invitational. Princeton fell to No. 1 UCLA 16-1 earlier in the day.
Down 6-2 with 3:20 left against the Sun Devils, the Tigers scored four times in the final three minutes to knot the game at 6-6 and force overtime. Play remained deadlocked through the first two overtime periods, but Colgan's second goal of the game in the sudden death period lifted the Tigers to their eighth win of the season. The Tigers are now 8-2.
Colgan and Danielle Carlson each scored twice in the game, while Megan Donahue, Jazmin Brown and Maegen Zitren tallied the other goals. Natalie Kim made eight save in defending the Tiger net to earn the win. In the day's first game the nation's strongest team overpowered the Tigers. UCLA jumped to an early lead and cruised to a 16-1 win. Samantha Shaughnessy scored Princeton's lone goal off a pass from Carolina Ardila. Natalie Kim made two saves, while Madeline McCarthy stopped three.
Princeton returns to action tomorrow in the next round of the 23-team Gaucho Invitational. The Tigers will learn their opponent later today. Eighteen of the 23 teams in the tournament are ranked in the Top-20 National Collegiate Water Polo Poll.
