Chapel Hill, N.C. - Ninth-ranked North Carolina plated 11 runs on 20 singles to defeat the Princeton baseball team 11-4 Monday afternoon at Boshamer Stadium. The game was added to the schedule after Monday's originally scheduled game at Longwood was cancelled due to poor field conditions. Sophomore Aaron Prince had three of Princeton's hits and junior Stephen Wendell hit a two-run homer.
North Carolina (11-3) threatened in each of the first two innings, but double plays helped the Tigers (0-6) get out of both without allowing a run. The games remained scoreless until the bottom of the third inning when North Carolina pushed five runs across the plate thanks to five singles, a walk and a sacrifice fly. The Tigers also had chances in the first four innings, putting base runners on in three of the innings, but were unable to advance the runners one they reached base. North Carolina extended its lead with four runs in the bottom of the fifth to make the score 9-0 Tar Heels. The big hit of the four-hit inning was a two-out two-run single from Matt Ellington. The Tar Heels added another two runs in the seventh inning off an RBI-single from Mike Daniel and a sac fly from Chase Younts.
Princeton got on the scoreboard with a pair of runs in the eighth inning. Sophomore Kevin Liao had a leadoff single to right field and made it to third when Prince doubled to the right field corner. Junior Adam Balkan grounded out to score Liao and move Prince to third. Prince later scored when sophomore Ian Shannon hit an RBI-infield single that the pitcher fielded.
Princeton added two more runs in the top of the ninth inning to make the final score 11-4. Freshman pinch-hitter Keola Kaluhiokalani hit a lead-off single to center field and score when Wendell hit his first career home run over the wall in left center.
Sophomore starter Eric Walz pitched five innings, allowing nine runs on 14 hits. He struck out one and walked five. Junior Zach Wendkos came on for the sixth and seventh innings and allowed a pair of runs on five hits. Sophomore Wills Sweney allowed one hit in a scoreless eighth for the Tigers.
Daniel Bard pitched seven scoreless innings for the Tar Heels. He surrendered three hits and struck out nine Tigers. Tyler Trice came on in the eighth and pitched the final two innings. He gave up four runs on five hits.
The teams will continue the series with a doubleheader tomorrow afternoon beginning at 12 noon. Wednesday afternoon's game against the Tar Heels that was scheduled for 2 p.m., has been cancelled.
