Irvine, Calif. - The 16th-ranked Princeton women's water polo team fell 9-3 at No. 13 UC Irvine on Tuesday night at the Anteater Aquatics Complex. Elyse Colgan scored twice and Jazmin Brown added the third goal in the loss.
The Tigers got on the board first when Colgan converted a penalty throw 33 seconds into the match. Nicole Flacco equaled the score with 3:23 left in the first period for the Anteaters. Tiger goalkeeper Natalie Kim had six saves in the first period to keep Princeton close.
The Anteaters took a 3-1 lead following Christine McDonald's first goal with 5:03 left and Jessica Lewis's first goal of the game on a power play with 3:41 left in the second period. The Tigers knotted the game up following Colgan's second goal of the game with 1:33 left in the half as the two teams entered halftime tied at 3-3.
UC Irvine took over in the third period with five goals for the offense and the defense shutting out the Tigers for an 8-3 lead entering the final period. Jessica Lewis scored her second power-play goal wiht 5:01 in the third. Christine McDonald added a power-play goal with 3:45 left. Nicole Frish added goals for UCI with 2:48 left and 0:39 left in the period. Robyn Kaake scored with 1:51 left in the third period and scored again with 1:08 remaining in the fourth period.
Kelly Woodbury had seven saves for UCI. Kim ended the game with 11 total saves for Princeton.
Princeton fell to 15-7 and play against Occidental and Pomona College tomorrow.
