Norfolk, Va. - The Princeton baseball team fell 18-2 to Old Dominion on Friday aftertoon at the Bud Methey Complex. After a scoreless first two innings, the Monarchs scored at least a run in each of the following innings en route to the win. Princeton scored both of its runs in the eighth inning. Senior Adam Balkan had an RBI-single in the inning.
Old Dominion went ahead in the third inning when a pair of leadoff walks came back to doom Tiger sophomore starter Wills Sweney. An RBI-groundout and a double just out of the reach of junior centerfielder Andrew Salini plated the two runners. The Monarchs then padded their lead with two runs in the fourth when a bases-loaded single through the right side scored a pair of runs.
The Monarchs broke open the game in the fifth inning with six runs and four in the sixth. Three of the runs in the fifth and all four of the runs in the sixth were unearned. ODU added three more runs to its lead with a three-run homer in the seventh and added a final run in the bottom of the eighth.
The Tigers scored a pair of runs in the eighth. Senior Will Venable walked and went to third on Salini's double to left center. A groundout by junior Ryan Eldridge scored Venable and advanced Salini to third, from where he scored on Balkan's RBI-single to left.
Sweney pitched three and two-thirds innings and allowed four runs on four hits and four walks and took the loss. Seniors Worth Lumry and Chad Tongue and freshmen Reid Peyton and Christian Staehely all pitched in relief. Princeton (0-9) continues the series tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m.
