PALO ALTO, Calif. - Despite a double by junior Amanda Erickson that tallied two RBIs, Princeton softball dropped a 3-2 decision to Utah at Boyd and Jill Smith Family Field on Stanford's campus. The Tigers fall to 13-6 overall, while the Utes improve to 9-13 on the season.
Erickson stepped to the plate with two outs on the board, sophomore Tiffany Andras at third and senior Melissa Finley at first. Erickson took a 2-2 count before hitting a double to left field that drove in Andras and Finley.
Utah got on the board early in the first inning as Kate Nygaard's single to right field allowed Jackie Wong to score and a base hit from Bryanne Durrence brought in Diana Phillips. Later in the fifth inning Wong scored the would-be winning run, off a two-base error at both short stop at right field.
Freshman Kristen Schaus earned her third loss of the season on the mound. Schaus (5-3) recorded three runs on four hits and 10 strikeouts in six innings. In the third inning Schaus proved to be clutch as she struck out her seventh batter with two outs and runners and second and third to allow no runs in the inning.
Brianna Gordon improved to 6-6 as the Utes pitcher.
Princeton plays third-ranked Stanford at 12 p.m. in the second game of the day for the Tigers.
