BOSTON, Mass. -- Junior Lindsay Motal recorded two homeruns in the Tiger's doubleheader against Boston University on Saturday at the BU Softball Field. The Tigers split the games with a win in the first game 4-1 before falling 6-5 in the second game. Princeton improves to 15-7, while the Terriers' record stands at 6-9 on the season. As the second batter in game one, Motal tallied her second homerun of the season off the first pitch from Boston's Ashlee Freeman. Motal's shot to right center field looked as if it was going to be ruled a double, but the right fielder's reaction to the play informed everyone that it was over the fence and a homerun. In the second inning Liz Alley retaliated with her second homerun of the season to deep center field in her first bat at home. At the end of two innings the game was knotted at one. Sophomore Tiffany Andras was the lead-off batter in the third inning and advanced to base after she fell behind 0-2 in the count. Senior Melissa Finley was the next batter to get on base with a single in the hole between the first and second base. Junior Erin Snyder stepped to the plate with two outs and hit a double to right field to drive in Andras and Finley. The Tigers took a 3-1 lead in the top of the third inning.
With one out and runners at the corners Freeman held the Tigers scoreless in the top of the fifth by striking out Amanda Erickson and then grounding out freshman Beth Dalmut. Junior Cristina Cobb-Adams got her first hit of the game, off a double to the gap in right-center field. Senior Ty Ries notched another run on the board in the sixth inning off the hit by Cobb-Adams. Snyder (8-2) allowed three hits, one walk and earned 11 strikeouts in the win. Snyder improved to the third-best spot on the all-time strikeouts list with a career 432 strikeouts, eight behind Brianne M. Galicinao (1999-2002). Freeman (2-5) took the loss for Boston and tallied seven hits, four walks and had six strikeouts in six innings pitched. The second game of the doubleheader featured a pitching battle between freshman Kristen Schaus and the Terriers' Detwiler. Schaus opened the game with 11 strikeouts in the first five inning, including 11 pitches in the second inning that claimed three batters. Detwiler held Princeton scoreless and allowed only two hits through the first four innings. Brandi Shields scored the first run of the game for Boston as Chiya Louie slapped a shot to the short stop, second base gap. McDonald hit a two-run RBI to left field that put the Terriers on top 3-0 in the bottom of the third. Leading off the fifth inning, junior Amanda Erickson hit a double to right field to put the Tigers in scoring position. Dalmut, then, hit the first pitch to center field, where the ball was dropped and Erickson scored on the play. Sophomore Calli Varner's single to left field put runners at the corners as Ries stepped to bat. Ries hit a single down the first base line to score Dalmut. Princeton trailed 3-2. Louie's bunt in the fifth scored Tyler Benson and put the Terriers up 4-2. Then in the top of the sixth inning Princeton mounted its comeback. Motal hit her second homer of the day off the replacement pitcher Jenna Grapensteter for the first of three runs. Down two outs, Dalmut garnered the tying RBI with a double to right field that sent Finley a green light to score. As the next batter, Varner hit a single to the second baseman that made a play on the ball, but lost her footing as Dalmut rounded third. Dalmut's fingers crossed the top corner of the plate just as the catcher tried to tag her. Princeton took its first lead of the game, 5-4, with the score. As the leadoff batter in the seventh inning, Brandi Shields hit a triple over Andras's head and scored the tying run off a bunt by Haas. Haas, who stole second and advanced to third on an error, scored the winning run for Boston after tagging up on a flyout to center field by Chiya Louie. Schaus (5-4) recorded the loss for the Tigers and finished the game with a career-tying 15 strikeouts and allowed eight hits. Grapensteter tallied her first win of the season and allowed five hits and three runs in two innings pitched. Princeton opens play at 1895 Field with a doubleheader against Fairfield on Tuesday, March 29 at 2 p.m.
