Say this for the Princeton women's lacrosse team in 2005--they sure know how to make it exciting. But the Tigers also know how to make it about winning.
It was certainly a little of both Wednesday night at Class of 1952 Stadium for the No. 4 Tigers, who used an early second-overtime goal from freshman Ashley Amo and a clutch save from senior Sarah Kolodner in the final seconds to hang on for a 13-12 win over No. 8 Georgetown.
The win, Princeton's third over a Top 10 team this season, wasn't certain until the final 10 seconds of the second overtime. After the Tigers (5-2) were whistled for intentionally passing the ball out of play with 24 seconds left, the Hoyas (5-2) had one final chance. Sarah Oliphant drove the left side and fed Catherine Elbe in front, but Kolodner got her leg and body on Elbe's shot and time expired.
Amo's game-winning goal for Princeton came just 51 seconds into the second three-minute overtime period, when Elizabeth Pillion sensed a double-team and found the freshman wide open in front of the Georgetown net.
"We needed to make those kinds of plays and win a game like this," said Princeton head coach Chris Sailer. "I think those were exactly the same kinds of plays we didn't make against Virginia (an 8-4 defeat) the other day."
"This is a great way for us to head into our Ivy League season," said Princeton's Kathleen Miller, who had three goals and an assist. "We have some confidence in knowing that a lot of people can make a big play at an important time." Six different players scored for each team, including three from Princeton's Ingrid Goldberg, who had four goals in Princeton's first six games, and freshman Katie Lewis-Lamonica. Goldberg also had two assists.
The game, which turned out to be the third overtime game between the teams in the last four seasons, was a seesaw affair in which neither team ever truly gained control. Princeton led 5-2 with 12:15 left in the first half after an Elizabeth Pillion goal, but the Hoyas then took advantage of draw controls and Princeton turnovers to score five straight goals. Elbe's goal with 1:32 left in the half put Georgetown ahead 7-5.
But Miller then singlehandedly gave Princeton momentum heading into halftime. She scored an unassisted goal with 46 seconds on the clock to pull Princeton within 7-6, then drilled a free-position opportunity with six seconds on the clock to tie the game at halftime.
Princeton would go on to lead 10-8 early in the second half and 11-9 after Lindsey Biles' second goal with 16 minutes left in the half, but Elbe and Coco Stanwick scored after that to tie the game.
Georgetown held the ball for the final 2:45 of regulation in an 11-11 game, but the Hoyas could not get a shot off in the final seconds and the game went to overtime.
Lewis-Lamonica scored off a nice feed from Ingrid Goldberg to give Princeton a 12-11 lead with 1:15 left in the first three-minute overtime, but Georgetown's Allison Chambers then had her fifth goal of the game with just 16 seconds left in that period to tie the game at 12.
Kolodner had nine saves for Princeton, which was playing its sixth game this season against a ranked opponent. The Tigers were outshot 31-26 but won 18 of the game's 29 draw controls.
Princeton hed earlier defeated No. 6 Johns Hopkins and No. 5 Duke. The Tigers also won their fourth straight game over Georgetown.
