ITHACA, N.Y. - The Princeton women's lacrosse team got a second chance after losing a two-goal late-game lead. Thanks to its pair of senior stars, the Tigers took advantage of that chance.
Lindsey Biles took a feed from Elizabeth Pillion with 14 seconds left in the first sudden-victory overtime period and scored past Cornell goalie Maggie Fava, giving No. 4 Princeton a 9-8 victory over the No. 14 Big Red in a wild game played on a rainy day on the turf at Schoellkopf Field.
Princeton (6-2, 2-0 Ivy), which played its second-straight overtime game and its third in the last 15 days, led 8-6 after freshman Ashley Amo scored her third goal of the game off a nice feed from Leigh Slonaker on a free-position attempt with 8:49 left. But Cornell's Amanda Linnertz scored just 31 seconds later after a Princeton turnover in the midfield. Cornell (4-3, 1-1 Ivy) would then tie the game at 8-8 with 3:11 on the clock after a flurry resulted in a Katherine Simmons goal.
The Big Red then had the final chance of regulation after holding the ball for two minutes, but Kolodner saved Simmons' shot with six seconds left and the game went into overtime.
Cornell's Fava, who had 10 saves, stopped the only shot attempt by either team in the first two overtime periods and the game entered sudden death. Pillion then had an initial shot go wide with 1:12 left in the sudden-death period before she found Biles for the game-winning goal.
Princeton, which defeated Cornell for the 18th consecutive time, trailed 5-3 late in the first half before using a four-goal run to seemingly take control. Amo's first goal with 7:53 left in the first half pulled the Tigers within 5-4 at halftime, and Pillion's goal 11:14 into the second half was the first goal for either team after halftime and tied the score at 5-5. Ingrid Goldberg then put Princeton ahead 6-5 with 16:44 left, and Amo then took a pass from Kathleen Miller and scored just 43 seconds later to give her team a 7-5 advantage.
The Tigers outshot Cornell 30-22 and won 15 of the game's 21 draw controls but committed 19 turnovers. Miller had two goals and two assists for Princeton, while Biles had two goals and Pillion a goal and an assist.
Simmons, Lindsey Moore and Margaux Viola each had two goals for Cornell, which hasn't beaten Princeton since the 1988 season.
Kolodner had seven saves for Princeton, which won its 13th straight Ivy League game dating back to 2003.
The Tigers beat No. 8 Georgetown in overtime Wednesday night by a 13-12 score. Penn State beat Princeton at Class of 1952 Stadium March 19, winning 14-13 in sudden-victory overtime.
