Princeton, N.J. - The Princeton men's golf team enters this weekend's Ivy League Championships looking to claim its fifth Ivy title in a six-year span. Last year Jason Gerken became the 11th Princetonian to capture the title and he will look to become the first repeat winner in 11 years when the tournament kicks off on Saturday at the Ballyowen Golf Club in Hamburg, N.J.
The tournament will feature three rounds of action, two on Saturday and a one on Sunday. Competition begins at 8 a.m., on both Saturday and Sunday. Live scoring will be available on Golfstat.com and a link can be found off the men's golf schedule page.
Last year, Gerken posted a five-shot victory over the field as Princeton regained the title it lost a year earlier. Three golfers tied for second, including Princeton's John Sawin. All nine members of last season's All-Ivy team could be competing in the tournament, including Cornell's Kevin Scelfo and Columbia's Matthew Wong.
Princeton has won 15 of the 29 Ivy League Golf Championships held including four in the last five years. The Tigers have also had eight different individual champions, three of which won two championships. Gerken can become the fourth Tiger to do so and the first to win consecutive league championships since Steve Dana in 1993 and 1994.
Princeton enters the weekend off a second-place finish in its own tournament last weekend. Princeton was nipped at the finish by one stroke by George Washington to finish second overall. Columbia (10th) and Penn (14th) were the only other Ivy opponents in the field. Gerken was Princeton's top finisher in ninth.
A week earlier, the Tigers placed fourth in the Drew Upton Classic in Maryland. Princeton finished ahead of all Ivy foes in the tournament, ahead of Cornell (10th), Yale (14th) and Columbia (15th). Brent Herlihy was tied for third in the event as the top Tiger finisher. Princeton is currently the highest ranked Ivy League team at 168th in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin rankings. Yale comes next at 211th and Penn at 216th. Gerken is the top-ranked player nationally in the Ivy League at 474th. Second is Tiger teammate Creighton Page at 858th. The only Ivy Leaguer in the top-1000 is Yale's Mark Matza.
