Baseball Swept in Doubleheader at Penn

Philadelphia, Pa. - Penn scored a run in the sixth inning to break a 3-3 tie and pick up a 5-4 win over the Princeton baseball team to complete a doubleheader sweep of the Tigers. The two teams are tied atop the Gehrig Division standings, although Princeton has four games in hand on the Quakers. Senior Will Venable had a pair of RBIs in the game.
Princeton (11-17, 5-5 Ivy) jumped to a 3-0 lead in the third inning when three consecutive singles to lead off the inning resulted in three runs. Junior Matthew Becker hit a leadoff single to left center and went to third on sophomore Aaron Prince's single to center. Aggressive base running allowed Becker to reach third and Prince to end up on second on the throw. Both runners scored when senior Will Venable hit a single to shallow center. Venable stole second, went to third on a double play ball and scored on a delayed steal to cap the inning. With a 1-2 count on sophomore Sal Iacono, senior Adam Balkan left first to steal second, once the Penn catcher came up throwing, Venable broke for home and scored standing up.
Penn (10-19, 7-7 Ivy) chipped a run off the lead in the bottom of the third. With an out, Kyle Armeny tripled off the wall in center field and he scored when Nate Moffie hit a sac fly to right field. The Quakers then evened the score at 3-3 in the bottom of the fifth inning. Evan Sobel hit a leadoff single to center and went to third on a sac bunt. A passed ball put Sobel on third and he scored on Alex Blagojevich's groundout. Armeny then singled, went to second on a walk Penn jumped to a 4-3 lead with a run in the sixth inning. Matt Horn, the leadoff hitter was hit by a pitch to reach base. He went to second on a sac bunt and scored on Andrew Bechta's double to the right-field corner. The Quakers then made it 5-3 in the seventh. Sean Abate hit a one-out single to right field, went to second on a groundout and scored on Horn's double to left.
Princeton got back within a run in the eighth inning. Junior Andrew Salini hit a double to center to start the inning. He went to third on a groundout and scored on sophomore Sal Iacono's RBI-fielder's choice.
Sophomore Gavin Fabian started the game and pitched five innings for the Tigers. He faced one batter, Horn, in the sixth and was charged with his run. He allowed four runs on four hits. He walked four, struck out four and hit two batters. Freshman Steven Miller came on in the sixth and pitched two innings, allowing a run on three hits.
Penn starter Brian Cirri went seven innings and allowed four runs on seven hits to pick up the win. He improved to 3-3. Remington Chin and Andy Console pitched scoreless relief.
The two teams complete the series tomorrow with a doubleheader at Penn beginning at 12 p.m.
