Princeton, N.J. - The Tigers fell behind 3-0 in the first inning and could never pull even as Monmouth took a 5-3 win from the Princeton baseball team Tuesday afternoon at Clarke Field. Sophomore Sal Iacono and junior Andrew Salini each had two hits and drove in a run as the Tigers outhit the Hawks. Senior Adam Balkan also had a pair of hits for Princeton.
Monmouth (18-15) used a 3-0 first inning to build a lead it would not relinquish. Back-to-back walks to start off the game put two on and the first run scored when Justin Braun doubled to left center. The second run scored on a sac fly. Braun scored when Andy Meyers singled to left center.
Princeton (13-18) cut two runs off the lead in the bottom half of the inning. Sophomore Aaron Prince hit a leadoff double that hit the left field line. He scored when Salini tripled to right center. Salini then scored on a single up the middle by Iacono.
Monmouth added a pair in the second inning. After recording the first two outs, a walk again hurt the Tigers as Frank Pilitowski headed to first. He went to third on a failed pickoff attempt and scored on a single up the middle by Brett Hardie. Hardie reached second on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Nick Massari to make the score 5-2.
Princeton could only chip one run off the lead the rest of the way as Monmouth took the win 5-3. The Princeton run came in the fourth. Iacono hit a one-out triple and he scored on a fielder's choice hit by junior Stephen Wendell. Sophomore Wills Sweney fell to 1-4 with the loss. In four innings, he allowed five runs on four hits and four walks. Freshmen Steven Miller and Reid Peyton and seniors Worth Lumry and Brian Kappel kept Monmouth off the scoreboard over the final five innings, allowing just two hits between them.
Gregg Petillo improved to 2-0 for Monmouth. He scattered six hits and allowed three runs. Jordan Crystal pitched two scoreless innings in relief and Kevin Schneider got his fifth save.
Princeton returns to action this weekend when Columbia visits Clarke Field for a pair of doubleheaders.
