PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Freshman Beth Dalmut recorded four RBI in game two and junior Erin Snyder posted her ninth shutout of the season, as the Princeton softball team clinched the Ivy League title and earned the automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament with a sweep over Brown this afternoon. The Tigers won the opener 4-0 before earning a 7-3 victory in game two. Princeton won the outright Ivy League title at 12-2 and 33-14 overall, while the Bears drop to 4-8 in the conference and 12-16 on the season. Seniors Melissa Finley and Ty Ries will make their third appearances to the NCAA Regionals after winning the Ivy League in both 2002 and 2003. Finley tied Tara L. Pignoli (1992-95) for the third-best position on the career RBI list with 118 after driving in a run in the first game. Snyder (15-3) tied head coach Maureen Barron's second-place shutout record from the 1995 season. Snyder, who finished the opening game of the doubleheader strong by striking out the last four batters and hitting a solo homer in the seventh inning, recorded a total of nine strikeouts, while allowing four hits. In the sixth inning the Bears earned two hits and one walk to load the bases, with no outs. Princeton, then, stood strong defensively, as sophomore Betsy Allaway caught a line in left field, Ries caught a foul ball and Snyder struck out a batter for the third and final out of the inning. Following the strikeout to end the sixth, Snyder hit a solo homer on the first pitch of the top of the seventh to garner her fifth long ball of the season and second home run of the weekend. Snyder ended the game by fanning all three batters in the seventh.
Finley's single up the middle notched the first run for the Tigers, as Andras scored in the second inning. Princeton's defense started the game with a key double-play. In the first inning Brown advanced two runners to base with only one out on the board. Freshman Lauren Bierman made a play on a hard bouncing ball and tossed it to junior Cristina Cobb-Adams at second base for the force out. Cobb-Adams, then, gunned out the runner at first with a pass to Dalmut. In the second game of the day Princeton held off a late rally by Brown to secure a perfect 4-0 weekend. The Bears rallied two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning with a double to left center and a single, but were contained by freshman Kristen Schaus with a strikeout to end the inning. In the seventh, Uchenna Omokaro earned a one-out walk and advance to second with a single from the next batter. However, Princeton held off the bears with three pop outs. Dalmut earned her fourth RBI of the game in the fifth inning, as Snyder crossed home plate for her third run of the game due to a double that bounced off the center field wall. Ries followed with a triple to right field that drove in Erickson and Dalmut. Later in the sixth inning, Snyder's single down the third base line scored Cobb-Adams for the seventh run of the game. The Tigers got on the board in the first inning with two runs off a single to right field by Dalmut with two outs on the board. Later in the third, Dalmut earned her 14th RBI of the year with a base hit to right field sent Snyder in for the third run of game two. Princeton led 3-1 at the end of three innings. Schaus (13-7) allowed three runs off six hits in the win. Rachel Fleitell scored the first run for Brown after tagging on a sacrifice fly by Courtney Jenkins in the bottom of the first inning. Berkes (3-10) took both losses for the Bears, allowing four runs off eight hits in the first game and seven runs off 13 hits in game two.
