Softball Drops Midweek Doubleheader

PRINCETON, N.J. - Although junior Cristina Cobb-Adams got the Princeton softball team on the board first, the Tigers dropped a doubleheader against non-conference opponent Saint Joseph's at the Class of 1895 Field. Princeton fell 3-1 in the opener and were blanked, 2-0, in the second game. The Tiger's overall record slips to 33-16, while the Hawks improve to 16-19 on the season.
Princeton's lone run of the day was in the first inning of game one. Junior Erin Snyder hit a single to right field and drove Cobb-Adams home from second base. Cobb-Adams advanced to base with a lead off single up the middle.
In the first game, the Hawks scored all of their runs off three hits in the third inning. Cara Deldeo hit a home run to left center field with a runner on for the first two runs and two batters later Rachel Pawlikowski scored off a single.
Senior Ty Ries gunned out two runners at second base from the plate in the first game. Ries caught a runner in the fourth inning going for an extra base after hitting a one-out single. Later, in the sixth, sophomore Calli Jo Varner caught a batter looking for the third strike and Ries fired the ball to Cobb-Adams at second to catch the runner trying to steal second on the strikeout.
Lauren Cognigni (10-9) earned the win for the Hawks, holding the Tigers to one run off five hits. Varner (5-2) took the loss for Princeton, allowing three runs off five hits. In the second game Saint Joseph's got on the board with a lead off homer from Deldeo in the second inning. Then, in the top of the seventh, Pawlikowski scored off a single to right field.
Princeton had a chance to score in the second inning, as junior Amanda Erickson hit a lead off double. Erickson moved to second base after sophomore Stephanie Steel hit the ball down the right foul line. However, Erickson became one of eight batter the Tigers left on base on the day.
Lauren Hughes (7-10) earned the win for Saint Joseph's after holding the Tigers scoreless off three hits, while, sophomore Amelia Runyan (0-2) allowed two runs off six hits for Princeton in the loss.
Action will continue at the Class of 1895 Field on Thursday, April 28 as the Tigers host Villanova. Game one of the doubleheader is slated for 3 p.m.
