PRINCETON, N.J. - Junior Erin Snyder recorded her sixth home run of the season in the first game of a doubleheader against Villanova. The Princeton softball team's solo-run games were not enough, as the Tigers fell 3-1 in game one before dropping game two 4-1. Princeton falls to 33-18 on the season, while the Wildcats improve to 34-23.
Princeton's lone run of the first game was Snyder's lead off homer to left-center field in the second inning.
In the top of the fourth Sarah Wall hit a single to left field with bases loaded that sent the game-tying runner home for Villanova. Sophomore Besty Allaway stopped the Wildcats from adding more runs to board, as she fielded Wall`s shot and fired it to senior Ty Ries. Ries, then, tagged the runner coming to the plate.
Villanova took the lead in the sixth inning with a bomb down the left foul line from Cassi Koenig. Later in the seventh, Sheri Donley's single to left center field drove in the Wildcat's third and final run of the game.
Snyder pitched seven innings and allowed three runs off nine hits, while Shannon Williams held the Tigers to just one run off two hits.
In the first inning of game two freshman Kristen Schaus got the Tigers out of a jam, as Villanova placed runners on second and third base with no outs. Junior Cristina Cobb-Adams chased a pop up for the first out and Schaus struck out the next two batters.
Villanova scored three runs off one hit and two Princeton errors in the second inning. The first run came after a play on a bunt resulted in an overthrown runner at first allowing the runner at second to go home. A sacrifice fly and a single from Sheri Donley scored the other runs. Princeton's first run came off a two-out double to left-center field from sophomore Tiffany Andras in the bottom of the second inning. Ries scored on the play.
In the fifth inning Cassie Koenig traded places with Lisa Krueger with a double to left field and gave the Wildcats a 4-1 lead.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, Princeton had one last chance to score with runners on second and third after Andras painted the third base line with a one-out double. Villanova's defense hung on to the win with a groundout and a strikeout.
Princeton left seven runners stranded in game two.
Schaus (13-8) pitched five innings and allowed four runs off six hits, while Kristen Haynes (13-11) of Villanova gave up one run off one hit for the win.
