Jamaica, N.Y. - St. John's scored runs in the first and third innings to build a lead and take a 10-0 win over the Princeton baseball team Tuesday night at the Ballpark at St. John's. Senior Adam Balkan had two of Princeton's four hits in the game as the Tigers now look to next weekend's Ivy League and Gehrig Division series with Cornell.
St. John's (27-12) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead with an unearned run in the first inning. Leadoff batter Joe Burke reached on a throwing error by junior Matthew Becker at shortstop and then reached second on a sac bunt. He scored on a single to center field by Blake Hershelman. Princeton (14-22) sophomore starter Wills Sweney then found himself in trouble in the second after walking the first two batters, but he proceeded to strike out the next three batters to keep the score 1-0 after two innings of play.
A second Princeton error to lead off the third inning resulted in St. John's taking a 2-0 lead on a second unearned run. P.J. Antoniato reached on an error by sophomore Aaron Prince at second base. Antoniato reached second on the error and scored when Greg Thomson doubled to right field.
St. John's extended the lead to 4-0 in the fourth inning with a pair of runs. With an out, Sam DeLuca was hit by a pitch and he went to second on a groudout. Burke singled him home, advanced to second on the throw home, and scored when Antoniato singled up the middle.
After, walking Princeton leadoff batter in the first inning, Red Storm starter Anthony Sullivan did not allow a player to reach base until fifth inning as recorded 12 straight outs and did not allow a hit. Balkan led off the fifth inning with a double to the gap in left center but was thrown out trying to stretch it into a triple. After getting out of a jam in the fourth, senior Worth Lumry pitched a perfect fifth before sophomore Michael Zaret came on for the sixth. He walked two batters before being replaced by senior Brian Kappel, who was able to get out of the inning, but not before both of Zaret's runners scored, making it 6-0 after six innings.
Sullivan was done after six innings. He surrendered just one Princeton hit while striking out 10 batters.
Princeton's first threat to score in the game came in the seventh inning when a pair of two-out infield singles put a pair on base. Balkan hit a chopper to third and beat the throw across and sophomore Sal Iacono lined a single off the leg of St. John's reliever George Brown, but Red Storm closer Craig Hansen came on and recorded a strikeout to end the inning. The Tigers had a base-runner reach third for the first time in the eighth inning. Junior Stephen Wendell doubled down the right-field line. He went to third on a groundout but was stranded there.
The Red Storm added an four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning thanks to a three-run homer by Chris Joachim.
Princeton resumes Ivy League play on Friday afternoon at 12 p.m., when it hosts Cornell in the first of home-and-home doubleheaders against the Big Red. Princeton needs to win three of the four games to claim the Gehrig Division crown.
