Princeton, N.J. - The Princeton baseball team takes a break form its Gehrig Division schedule tonight by traveling to Queens, N.Y., tonight to take on St. John's in non-conference action. Princeton is 2-0 this season against opponents from the Big East, having defeated Rutgers and Seton Hall, and will look to make it 3-0 when the first pitch is thrown at 7 p.m. Fans can follow along online with Gametracker. A link can be found on the schedule and results page.
Princeton (14-21, 8-8 Ivy) enters the game having dropped four of its last five games. The Tigers dropped a 5-2 decision to Monmouth last Tuesday, and then fell in three of four games to Columbia over the weekend. The three losses, coupled with four Cornell wins over Penn, leave Princeton looking up in the Gehrig Division standings for the first time all year. The Tigers are a game behind Cornell and will need to take three of the four meetings with the Big Red this weekend to secure the Gehrig title.
St. John's (26-12, 11-3 Big East) enters the weekend having won 17 of its last 20 games. The Red Storm is 11-3 in the Big East and sits atop the standings, half a game ahead of Notre Dame and Boston College. Tonight's match up features two teams that played in the NCAA tournament a year ago.
The teams have faced three common opponents this season: St. John's dropped a game to Harvard, while Princeton split a doubleheader with the Crimson; The Red Storm beat Columbia 22-3, while Princeton struggled against the Lions, going 1-3; and St. John's took two of three games from Seton Hall, while Princeton won its only meeting with the Pirates.
Last Season, St. John's took a 6-4 win from the Tigers. The Red Storm scored five runs in the first two innings and held on from there to preserve the win. Senior Will Venable had two hits in the game and junior Matthew Becker had an RBI-double in the game. A Glance at the All-Time Series
