Hanover, N.H. - The Princeton baseball team dropped a 2-1 decision to Dartmouth Saturday afternoon in the second game of the Ivy League doubleheader at Red Rolfe Field. Princeton freshman starter Christian Staehely and Dartmouth's Josh Faiola put on a pitching show as the Big Green posted the one-run lead.
After two scoreless innings, Dartmouth (7-9, 4-2 Ivy) scored once in the third to take a 1-0 lead. With one out, Erik Bell singled through the left side and Andrew Nacario legged out an infield single. A balk put the runners on second and third and Bell scored when Will Schmidley grounded out to second base.
The score remained 1-0 through the bottom of the sixth when the Big Green led off the inning with consecutive doubles to add a second run and make the score 2-0. Will Bashelor hit the leadoff single and Jeff Speights hit the one that scored Bashelor.
Princeton (9-14, 4-2 Ivy) threatened in the ninth as senior Will Venable and junior Ryan Eldridge singled to put runners on the corners. Eldridge was pinch run for by sophomore Eric Walz. That brought up senior Adam Balkan who flied out to left field. The sac fly scored Venable but could have been worse for Dartmouth as the left fielder, Andrew Nacario, made a diving play to make the catch in left center.
Staehely pitched all eight innings for the Tigers. He allowed two runs on five hits and struck out eight as he fell to 0-2. Faiola pitched a complete-game five-hitter allowing a run on five hits.
Princeton continues its weekend tomorrow at Harvard.
