Princeton, N.J. - Three members of the Princeton baseball team - senior Brian Kappel and juniors Andrew Salini and Erik Stiller - were named to the 2005 Academic All-District II Baseball Team today. All three were honored as such for the first time in their careers. Both pitching slots on the team went to Tigers, while Salini snagged one of the outfield slots. In each of the last four seasons, a Tiger has occupied at least one of the All-District Team pitching spots.
Kappel appeared in a team-high 15 games for the Tigers and had a 2-1 record with six saves in 22-and-a-third innings. He had a 2.01 ERA and allowed just five earned runs all season. He scattered 11 hits and struck out 22. He was a unanimous first-team All-Ivy selection in 2005 for the second time in his career and was the New Jersey Relief Pitcher of the Year in 2004. He graduates one save shy of the Princeton record for saves in a career. A native of Atlanta, Ga., Kappel is a history major.
Stiller led the Tigers' starting pitching staff with a 6-2 record and a 2.98 ERA. He pitched four complete games and had two shutouts. In the middle of the season, Stiller had a 24-inning streak in which he did not allow a run, the second longest such streak in Princeton baseball history. He joined Kappel as a first-team All-Ivy pitcher this season and was named the Ivy League's Pitcher of the Week after a four-hit shutout, in which he struck out 11 at Brown. A native of Bryan, Texas, Stiller is an economics major.
Salini ranked at or near the top of the Tiger hitters in nearly all offensive categories. He finished the season batting .371 with 56 hits and 26 RBIs. He had 15 extra-base hits, which includes five home runs. Salini led the Tigers in hits, and was second in batting average, doubles, RBI, on-base percentage and slugging percentage. He was named an honorable mention All-Ivy in 2005 for the second consecutive season and was named to the Ivy League honor roll twice in 2005. A native of Andover, Mass., Salini is an economics major. Other Tigers to have received the honor in recent years are Ross Ohlendorf (2004), Thomas Pauly (2002, 2003) and Mike Chernoff (2003).
District II covers Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. The All-District players from the eight national districts are now eligible for the 2005 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Baseball Team.
To be eligible, an athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve and maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.20 on a scale of 4.00. He must have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at the institution and must have completed at least one full academic year at the institution.
