Princeton, N.J. - Senior relief pitcher Brian Kappel was named to the 2005 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Baseball Team today. The honor was the fifth of the season for Kappel, who has also been named first-team All-Ivy, first-team all-state, academic All-Ivy and first-team All-District.
As a member of the All-District II team, Kappel advanced to the national ballot and was selected as an Academic All-America. He becomes the fifth Princeton baseball player to receive the award and the first since Thomas Pauly in 2002. The other winners were Ken Beytin (first-team, 1974), Bob Flaherty (second-team, 1977), Sean Sullivan (third-team, 1992) and Pauly (third-team, 2002). Kappel is a third-team selection.
Kappel appeared in a team-high 15 games for the Tigers and had a 2-1 record with six saves in 22-and-a-third innings. He had a 2.01 ERA and allowed just five earned runs all season. He scattered 11 hits and struck out 22. He was a unanimous first-team All-Ivy selection in 2005 for the second time in his career and was the New Jersey Relief Pitcher of the Year in 2004. He graduates one save shy of the Princeton record for saves in a career. A native of Atlanta, Ga., Kappel is a history major.
To be eligible, an athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve and maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.20 on a scale of 4.00. He must have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at the institution and must have completed at least one full academic year at the institution.
