Princeton, N.J. - The San Diego Padres selected senior centerfielder Will Venable in the seventh round of the 2005 Major League Baseball Draft Tuesday afternoon. Venable recently received Princeton's Roper Award as one of the top male athletes at Princeton after a stellar basketball and baseball career for the Orange and Black. Now he will focus on baseball in the Padres' organization.
Venable was selected with the 218th pick. The son of former Major Leaguer Max, was also chosen in last year's draft by the Baltimore Orioles with the 439th pick in the 15th draft but opted not to sign and returned for his senior year. With his being drafted by the Padres, Venable has the potential to play for his father as Max is a hitting coach with San Diego's Class A affiliate in Fort Wayne, Ind.
Venable was a unanimous choice for first-team All-Ivy as a senior. He led the Tigers' hitters with a .390 average. He had 55 hits, 32 RBIs, scored 35 runs and hit nine home runs. Venable hit .380 in Ivy games with 20 RBIs and six home runs. Last season he was an honorable mention All-Ivy. It was his fourth All-Ivy award as he was a first-team All-Ivy guard in men's basketball as a junior and second-team as a senior. The last Ivy Leaguer to be named All-Ivy in baseball and basketball was Chris Young, now a starting pitcher with the Texas Rangers.
Venable becomes the 11th Tiger drafted in the past seven seasons that have played under head coach Scott Bradley.
