Princeton, N.J. - Pitcher Brian Kappel, a member of the Princeton baseball graduating class of 2005, recently came to terms on a minor league deal with the Seattle Mariners. He was assigned to the club's Arizona Summer League team in Peoria, Ariz., where he will play along side former Princeton class and teammate Worth Lumry.
Kappel is the second member of the Class of 2005 to sign with a minor league team and the third Tiger that played on the 2005 Princeton roster to begin his pro career this summer. Kappel joins Lumry and Will Venable on that list. He is the seventh Princeton player to play pro baseball in the last two seasons.
Kappel was an Academic All-America this season as he became the fifth Tiger to achieve the honor. He appeared in a team-high 15 games for the Tigers and had a 2-1 record with six saves in 22-and-a-third innings. He had a 2.01 ERA and allowed just five earned runs all season. He scattered 11 hits and struck out 22. He was a unanimous first-team All-Ivy selection in 2005 for the second time in his career and was the New Jersey Relief Pitcher of the Year in 2004. He graduates one save shy of the Princeton record for saves in a career.
