GOTEBORG, Sweden - Göteborg is Sweden's second-largest city, and it proved to be a perfect place for the Princeton women's basketball team to take a well-deserved break before their action on the court in Scandinavia resumes Friday night.
The city of over 400,000 on Sweden's Western coast is about halfway in between Malmö, where the Tigers stayed for three nights while playing the Danish National Team just across the bridge in Denmark, and Oslo, where Princeton will meet the Norwegian national team both Friday and Saturday night. Look for game recaps of each of those games on GoPrincetonTigers.com later in the week.
Princeton arrived in Göteborg at about 2 p.m. local time and spent some time on the Kungsportsavenyen, the main street of the city filled with shops, restaurants and sights. But after checking into the Hotel Riverton later in the afternoon, the real fun came later at night.
That's because Göteborg is the home of Scandinavia's largest amusement park, Liseberg, and the Tigers took full advantage of their time by riding several roller coasters that rival any of the coasters in the amusement parks in the United States. Liseberg, which also features concerts and gardens in addition to its famous rides, is one of the most visited attractions in all of Europe.
Princeton split its games against the Danish national squad on Tuesday and Wednesday, winning on Tuesday before falling in overtime Wednesday night. The Tigers will play six games overall on their trip before returning home next Wednesday.
Göteborg, first established as a city in the 17th century, is the largest city in the country of Sweden besides the city of Stockholm, the capital. Liseberg not only features the typical rides and attractions of an amusement park but also a miniature "walk of fame" featuring stars similar to Mann's Chinese Theatre in Los Angeles, indicating the likes of performers such as Eric Clapton and Tina Turner have performed on its stage.
