OSLO, Norway - At every stop on its tour of Scandinavia, the Princeton women's basketball team has experienced the best that local culture has to offer. On the court, the Tigers have also faced some terrific competition, which they found out again Saturday night.
Nenna Sand, who played for Arizona State from 1996-2000, scored 26 points to lead Norway to an 89-69 victory over the Tigers in the second of two games between the teams at Oslo's Apollikka Hall. Princeton, which got off to a slow start and trailed 44-33 at halftime, cut Norway's lead to 55-52 late in the third quarter, but a 10-2 run by the host team after that put the game away.
The Norwegian team still didn't have an answer for Princeton sophomore Meagan Cowher, who shot 10 for 16 from the field and 6 for 6 from the line, scored 26 points and added eight rebounds. The Tigers also got strong inside play from senior Becky Brown, who made 5 of 6 shots from the field.
Ali Prichard had another strong game from the outside, scoring 12 points and connecting on three of Princeton's eight three-point shots.
After splitting games with the Danish national team last week, the Tigers will play Horsholm, a Danish club team, in Copenhagen Monday and Tuesday before heading back home Wednesday.
The Tigers will head back to Copenhagen, where they played twice last week, in a much different way than they got to Oslo. The Tigers will board the DFDS Seaways "Pearl of Scandinavia," a monstrous cruise ship, for an overnight trip to Denmark from Norway. The team bus, driven by the unflappable Lasse, will drive onto the ship as well and meet the team in Copenhagen Monday morning.
Before they head onto the ship Sunday evening, the Tigers will visit the island of Bygdoy in the Oslo fjord, filled with museums dedicated to Norwegian culture. After the game Saturday, Princeton experienced some of the nightlife on Oslo's main street, located just around the corner from the team hotel.
