COPENHAGEN, Denmark - If you ever get the chance to take the overnight cruise from Oslo to Copenhagen, go ahead and do it. Otherwise, you'll be missing out on what is probably among the most spectacular things you can do in all of Scandinavia.
The Princeton women's basketball team sailed from Oslo at around 5 p.m. Sunday evening on the DFDS Pearl of Scandinavia, watching on deck as the ship left the harbor and pushed out in the Oslo fjord. For the next three hours, the team was left with outstanding views of the city and the surrounding Norway countryside, including a nice sunset at around 9 p.m.
The supersized cruise boat featured a discotheque, movie theatre and several clubs and restaurants, including the Seven Seas buffet when the Tigers enjoyed Scandinavian buffets for both dinner on Sunday and breakfast in the morning. Team members took advantage of the spectacular views from the ship as well as the many entertainment options.
After a wake-up call over the ship's PA system, the Pearl of Scandinavia arrived in Copenhagen harbor at around 9:15 a.m., around 16 hours after it had left Oslo. The Tigers were accomodated in two-person berths on the ship, which features 12 decks, including a pool deck on the 11th floor.
When Princeton's bus pulled off the boat and the team departed, they were both met by Annika, the team's tour guide for the morning. Annika led the team on a three-hour tour of the city center, including stops at the Royal Palace and the Opera House and at the famous Little Mermaid statue in the harbor.
The team arrived at the Sofitel Hotel, its home for the next two nights, just after noon. After Monday night's game against Horsholm, a Danish club team, Princeton will head to the famous Tivoli Gardens, right across the street from the hotel.
