HØRSHOLM, Denmark - The Princeton women's basketball team got a victory Monday evening in Denmark, pulling ahead in the third quarter and then holding on for a 64-62 win over Hørsholm, a Danish club squad located about 30 minutes outside the city of Copenhagen. The Tigers led by five points in the final seconds before Hørsholm made a late three-pointer as the clock hit zero.
Back at the Sofitel Hotel in Copenhagen just a few minutes later, the Tigers then crossed the street and spent the night at the world-famous Tivoli Gardens, perhaps the most well-known landmark in all of Scandinavia. The evening at Tivoli, which can only be described as a combination amusement park and garden, featured a tribute show to the Danish fairy-tale writer Hans Christian Andersen, who was born 200 years ago.
Princeton spends a final day in Copenhagen Tuesday exploring the sights before playing its final game of the trip against Hørsholm and then flying home Wednesday morning. Prior to Tuesday night's game, the Tigers will take part in a basketball clinic with local coaches and players from the Copenhagen area.
As for Monday's game, Meagan Cowher shook off a slow start to lead the Tigers to their comeback win, scoring 19 of her team-high 22 points in the final three quarters. Cowher also had 13 rebounds on the night and has averaged 27 points and nine rebounds per game in Princeton's last three games on the trip.
The Tigers trailed 17-12 after one quarter, but used a late second-quarter run to take their first lead at 32-31 with less than two minutes to go in the half. Princeton, which took as much as a five-point lead in the final quarter, held Hørsholm to just 26 points in the second half.
Becky Brown scored seven points and had 10 rebounds, while Ali Smith's 12 points came on four of Princeton's seven three-pointers on the night. Princeton is now 2-3 on its tour of Scandinavia, having split games with the Danish National Team last Tuesday and Wednesday before dropping two games to the Norwegian National Team in Oslo Friday and Saturday.
