PRINCETON, N.J. - Contests at six-time NCAA champion Tennessee and a visit from 2005 NCAA Regional finalist Rutgers highlight a 27-game slate for the Princeton women's basketball team, which begins with a trip to local rival St. Joseph's on Nov. 18.
Led by post player Rebecca Brown, who returns for her senior season after averaging a team-best 13.8 points and 6.7 rebounds per game last season, the Tigers return 12 players from their 2004-05 roster, including nine of the team's top 10 scorers and all five starters.
"It's an exciting schedule that features very competitive games right from the start, with St. Joseph's on the road and Lehigh at home. We'll learn a lot about our team early in the season," said Princeton head coach Richard Barron.
After the opening two games against Keystone State schools, the Tigers will make their only regular-season venture out of the Eastern Time Zone when they travel to Northern California for a Thanksgiving-weekend tournament at St. Mary's College in Moraga, Calif. Along with the host Gaels and Tigers will be Central Florida and Butler.
December features three more home games, headlined by the Dec. 11 tilt against Rutgers and five road contests including the Dec. 20 matchup against Tennessee. In preseason magazine polls, the Scarlet Knights received a high ranking of third from Lindy's, and SLAM tabbed the Lady Vols as its preseason No. 1.
The Ivy League portion of the schedule gets underway Jan. 7 at Penn in the first of five straight road games for Princeton to start the conference season. The back half of the league loop is much kinder to the Orange and Black as seven of Princeton's last nine games take place in Jadwin Gym.
Princeton partisans get their first opportunity to see the 2005-06 Tigers at Jadwin on Nov. 22 at 7 p.m. when Lehigh visits for the first of 12 home contests. Last season, Princeton finished 13-14 overall and 5-9 in the Ivy League.
