PRINCETON - After falling behind 1-0 in the first, Yale scored the next six goals to pick up a 6-1 win against the Princeton men's hockey team on Friday night at Baker Rink. Junior Grant Goeckner-Zoeller gave Princeton a 1-0 lead 3:35 into the first, but Yale answered with two in the second and four in the third to pick up the win.
The Tigers began the game with a strong first period in which they outshot Yale 10-8. Princeton opened the scoring 3:35 into the game when Goeckner-Zoeller scored his team-leading seventh goal of the season. Junior Darroll Powe collected a pass from junior Daryl Marcoux in the corner and fed Goeckner-Zoeller on the doorstep, from where he beat Yale goaltender Alec Richards to give Princeton the lead. The first period ended with the score 1-0.
Yale took the lead with two goals in the second period. The first Bulldog goal came 5:11 into the third on the power play. After a face-off win, the puck was worked to the far point where Blair Yaworski fed Joe Zappala on the opposite side. Zappala one-timed the puck for the goal. Bill LeClerc also assisted on the goal as Yaworski and LeClerc each had three points in the game.
Yale went ahead for good at the 8:41 mark when the Bulldogs took advantage of a Princeton turnover and went two-on-one into the Tiger zone. Jeff Hristovski and Jean-Francois Boucher had a give-and-go and Boucher scored to give his team a 2-1 lead. Yale outshot Princeton 10-4 in the second period.
The Bulldogs broke the game open with four goals in the final frame, including two empty netters. Yaworski scored the first of the period when he picked up a rebound in front at 2:08, then LeClerc made it 4-1 on a goal from the right circle. Hristovski and Brad Mills added the empty-net goals. Richards made 29 saves for Yale as Princeton outshot the Bulldogs 30-27 in the game and 16-9 in the third period. Senior Eric Leroux made 18 saves in 54:26 before being relieved by freshman Thomas Sychterz, who stopped three shots in 3:28.
Princeton fell to 5-12 overall with the loss and 2-9 in the league while Yale climbed to 4-9-1 overall and 3-6 in the ECACHL.
